Why are CBD Oils being used in Sports?

Understanding into the effects and benefits of CBD oil has been shrouded in skepticism and it would be fair to say, suspicion from some quarters. However, change is coming from the world of professional sport.

From NFL players to MMA fighters, sports stars are beginning to bang the drum for its effects in aiding recovery without the side effects of prescription drugs.

Social media and the influence of popular culture has also brought these opinions from key sporting influencers to the fore, helping to educate people on the benefits of using CBD oil. To counter the stress and physical strain of elite sport, the use of prescription medication is rife, however the side effects of taking these drugs is less well documented, with athletes susceptible to developing a dependency on them. The result of  this can lead to various health problems and other issues, which in some cases can prematurely end a promising career.

The Science of recovery and the Endocannabinoid system

For those who doubt the logic behind the usage of CBD oil, science can explain the exact chemical effect produced by using them. Although the feeling of euphoria experienced after a workout is partly due to endorphins, there is the presence of another factor – anandamide, an endocannabinoid fatty acid neurotransmitter, which is essentially the naturally produced “bliss” chemical. Athletes using CBD oil can reduce recovery time and aid optimum performance, thus protecting their bodies from the rigors of training and peak performance. Phytocannabinoids (from plants) work perfectly with the natural Endocannabinoid System of the body.

This system is responsible for maintaining all bodily functions and producing a balance called Homeostasis. Those speaking out in support of the use of these oils include NFL footballer Eugene Monroe, who is the first active NFL football player to speak openly about his use of CBD. Monroe supports“The Bright Lights Campaign” which focuses on studies behind the effects of CBD and how it can be positively used by athletes and football players.

World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) Approves CBD

In 2016, MMA fighter Nate Diaz sparked debate by using his CBD oil vape pen at a press conference after a fight with Conor Mcgregor. He spoke honestly about the effects of CBD and how it aided his recovery from intense fighting and training.

Buoyed by the athletes who have had the courage to speak candidly about their use of CBD oil, professional sports associations have pledged a change in attitude, most notably with the decision to remove cannabidiol CBD from the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) banned substances list at the start of 2018. There are now no penalties given to athletes who choose to use CBD oils.

This change in attitude is helping to shatter the stigma associated with using cannabidiol, with an increasing recognition that the use of CBD oil could be a positive addition to the repertoire of an athlete’s routine. The question now is will other industries follow and further the acceptance of CBD oil?

Conclusion.

Attitudes to the use of CBD in sports is changing rapidly, as sports people admit their use and sports authorities re-asses and recognise the huge benefits of this near-miraculous oil.

Perform at your highest level. Recover fast. Use CBD
